New Curler Information
Intro: If you have never curled or just never curled with us, click the subject lines to expand them for a description of what to expect and how to get started.
People/teams +
Team Composition: A traditional full curling team is 4 people. Positions are Lead, Second, Vice, and Skip. Usually more experienced curlers take Vice and Skip positions, while newer curlers throw Lead and Second. But it’s entirely up to the team to decide and the positions can be changed (as long as your not in the middle of a game).
Player/League Skill Level: All leagues at the MCC are “open” leagues meaning men, women, young, old, skilled or novice are all welcome to compete with any team composition they want. In practice this means we have some teams that are just out for fun and socializing, some teams that are looking to compete at a high level and go on to larger competitions, and everything in between.
Recommended Team Makeup: If you are registering or making a team we recommend getting 5 or 6 people total to commit to the team, that way any 1 person has scheduling issues you can still curl with a full team. If you know someone who has curled or are open to us helping place a curler with experience on your team, having a curler with a few seasons under their belt really helps new curlers pickup up the game and find success earlier.
What happens if you can’t get enough players: If your trying to make a team and don’t have 4 people contact us and we’ll try to find you a player who is looking to join a team. If you can’t field a full team for one of your league games we allow teams to compete with only 3 people. If you cannot field 3 players within 15 minutes of your scheduled start time your game will be forfeit.
Equipment Required +
Clean shoes: tennis shoes work well, avoid boots as they don’t allow full range of motion.
Warm flexible clothing: its about 40 degrees air temp on the ice and you will be performing athletic motions, we don’t want your pants to blow out when your trying to deliver a stone.
Other: the curling club can provide you the rest of the necessary equipment, we encourage you to purchase your own brooms and slider/curling shoes after you’ve been with us a season or two.
Time Commitments/Nights +
Length of commitment: Joining a league is a commitment to curl weekly from the first week of December until mid march. With holidays, playoffs, and weather events this usually works out to about 16 weeks.
Nights: Leagues are run Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. You pick a night that works for you, register for that nights league, and then show up every week at the appropriate time.
Game Times: Depending on how many teams are signed up for that nights league there may be 2 draws (sessions of games), typically at 6:30pm and 8:10pm. If there is only 1 draw it is typically at 7pm.
How to register
Intro: Description of the registration process for new, returning, and prospective curlers. Click the subject lines below to expand the topics.
Team Registration +
What: Team registration is you letting the MCC know you intend to field a team to compete in league.
Who: Only 1 person per team needs to complete this form, usually the Skip or team organizer/captain.
Why: So we can get you in the schedule and start working on game assignments.
Where: Online, right here on this website. See the button links below to go to Team Registration
When: Needs to be completed before Dec 1st, and you need to attend the week 1 exhibition matches and players meeting on the league night you registered for. Otherwise we won’t consider you registered.
What information you need to complete this process: You will need to know what night you want to curl on, who is playing on your team, and what name you want to compete under. If you don’t have a full team yet that’s okay, you can still register, just make sure to follow up with us when you fill the spot, or let us know you are looking for a player and we’ll try to find you someone.
Individual Registration +
What: Individual registration is you giving us personal information about yourself (address, phone, email), answering questions to determine what your dues are, electronically signing our insurance waiver, and paying your dues.
Who: Everyone who competes in MCC league, no exceptions.
Why: Primarily for insurance and to collect dues. Our insurance is through the United States Curling Association, and we need to submit to them the information we collect so they will honor our insurance policy. This process also lets us record payment of your league dues, which we compare to team registrations so we know all the teams have paid in full or not.
Where: Online, right here on this website. See the button links below to go to Individual Registration.
When: Needs to be completed by Dec 1st. If you haven’t registered and paid by Week 2 of league we will start harassing you at the club to do so, and if you still haven’t paid by the following week will record your games as forfeits until payment is received.
What information you need to complete this process: Need to know what team(s) and night(s) you are curling on, and you will need a credit card to complete paying your dues online. We do allow other forms of payment but you need to indicate that in your registration and make arrangements to pay promptly via whatever method is preferred. WE PREFER YOU PAY ONLINE WHEN YOU REGISTER.
New Curler Looking To Join +
What: This is you indicating to the MCC that you want to play in our leagues but don’t have a team.
Who: Anyone who is willing and able to compete in our leagues.

Where: Online, right here on this website. See the button links below to go to New Curler Looking For A Team registration.
When: Sooner is better! We do our best to find everyone who wants to curl a team, but the sooner you let us know and the more effort you put into attending open houses and learning to curl before season starts the more successful we can be finding you a home for the season. Our leagues start Dec 2nd, if you are reading this after that date please contact us by email at minotcurling@gmail.com, there is usually a team or 2 who need a player mid season due to injury or personal/work scheduling conflicts that arose.
What information you need to complete this process: What league night(s) you would be able to curl on (Mon/Wed/Thur), and some basic contact and experience information.

Format & Play of Minot Curling Club Leagues
We follow USCA curling rules at the Minot Curling Club. We endeavor to foster a competitive atmosphere and honor the “Spirit Of Curling”.
In practice this has meant that while we encourage all players to familiarize themselves with, and follow, the current USCA rules in their games we do not observe every intricacy of the sport in our weekly leagues and encourage our members to address issues that arise during a game mutually between themselves before involving fellow curlers, MCC League Managers, or MCC Board Members to resolve the conflict.
In that vein, it is the responsibility of all club members and visiting curlers to learn, follow, and politely educate fellow curlers on the rules of the sport and curling etiquette of the MCC. League managers & board members are always happy and able to offer guidance for specific scenarios and rule interpretations, but they may not be available the moment an issue comes up during play. We do our best to resolve and make right any issues, but we will not force teams to replay games whose outcomes were effected by a rules interpretation or miscommunication. Further we will not change a teams win to a loss or vice versa, after the game has been completed, if a post-game discussion reveals a rule was incorrectly followed that effected the outcome. We call our own fouls in curling and if the opposing team does not call themselves out it is the non-offending teams responsibility to call the foul. A mutually agreed upon resolution should be reached before resuming play, and while team input can be sought it is the responsibility of the team skips to reach that agreement and specifically the non-offending teams skip to determine what resolution is satisfactory.
Our league night games are 6 ends of curling, we schedule 1:40 for you to start and finish your game. If you run long you may not get to play all 6 ends, so it’s important to try to maintain a good pace of play so everyone can get all the curling they paid for in. There is bell that will be rung 10 minutes prior to the end of your allocated time, once you hear the bell you finish the end you are on and that is the game. For example, if the bell is run while you are playing the 5th end, you will complete the 5th end and the score at that time is the game final. If you are playing the 6th end and the bell is rung, you can complete your game like normal.
It is the responsibility of the winning team to indicate their win on the scheduling board. Usually by circling the winning teams name. Unrecorded games we will do our best to determine the winner, but if no consensus can be reached we will consider the game a loss for both teams.
It is up to the Skips of both teams how a tie will be broken, by mutual agreement. If the game has already used up its allocated time the method of tie breaking will be one that does not further delay the game unnecessarily (only applicable if another game is scheduled after) such as a skips draw, coin flip, pistols at dawn, or rock/paper/scissors. Another end is the traditional tie breaker, and if time allows that is a great option.
Finally, curling is a social sport with a competitive aspect. What that means is that curling is a sport founded on the principal that making new friends or acquaintances, and spending time with your existing ones is the greatest purpose of the sport. We try to encourage high level play and cheer for our club members who go out and compete locally, in state, nationally, and on the world stage; The primary goal of the MCC is to provide a fun, safe, affordable, and welcoming environment for the people of our community to participate in the great sport of curling.
